The Walmart at 21st and Maize is getting rid of their fabric department. All fabric and Trims by the yard are 50% off. There is not much left of the fabric but the trims by the yard are still aplenty. I stocked uped for future projects.

Beginning Tribal Classes starting April 23rd..

Just to let everyone know that Beginning Tribal Classes will start on Wend. April 23rd at 7:30 - 8:30.

Anyone interested in performing tribal must take at least 8 weeks of this class before moving into the saturday technique classes.

Tentative Tribal Class Schedule and Class Descriptions

Wed (7:30 - 8:30) Basic Tribal Technique
For all students new to Tribal Style Bellydance and those wishing to refine their basic skills. This is an ongoing class that will focus on posture, body awareness, history and the fundamentals of Tribal Style Bellydance movements.
*Prerequisite: anyone that has not been thru this class will be required to be in this class 8 weeks before continuing to other levels.

Sat (11:00 - 12:00) Tribal Variations
(Instructor Referral Only)
This Class will build on the material learned on Basic Tribal Technique class. Each class will focus on zills, layering, complex movements and their refinement. We will work in small groups as well as chorus group.
Newly admitted students will be encourage in participate in chorus during troupe performance.
*Prerequisite: Basic Tribal Technique class and instructor’s referral.

Sat (12: 15- 1:45) Troupe Performance
(Instructor Referral Only)
For students who are fluent in Tribal Bellydance’s vocabulary and Improvisation. This is a continuous class that will build on group dancing, formations, implementing zills into the dance. Students will improve their communications skills by following and leading during improvisational dance.
*Prerequisite: any student in this class must be in Tribal Variations class.

Recommended class attire: any clothing that you can stretch in, comfortable clothes such as sweatpants/yoga pants, a sports bra, a sports hugging top (so that you and your instructor can better see your posture.) Avoid baggy shirts.

We are trying to earn some money to study in Hawaii with Kumu(master teacher of hula). IT will be a 5 family sale. Furniture, clothes, nicknacks, costumes, ect.

We will be having the August meeting for the Middle Eastern Culture and Dance Association this Sunday at 3:00 at Riverside Perk.

We need officers and general members! We've had a lot of fun this year, and our events are heavily attended. Our shows have been hugely successful. MECDA is a wonderful for networking, and extra performance opportunities. We would like to get a more well-rounded group of officers from all of the different troupes and studios around town.

Strange call re photo shoot --beware

I just got a really odd call from an amateur photographer wanting to book me for a photo shoot. I got suspicious because he wasn't giving me many details. I asked if it was for publication, and he says it may wind up in an art piece. That was all he would say. It could have been completely harmless, but I just got a bad vibe.

He is calling bellydancers around town, so I wanted to give you guys a heads up.

A Challenge to Fellow Dancers - Breast Cancer Research Car Tags

I challenge all Kansas bellydancers to sign up to get the Driven to Cure license tags in the memory of our sisters in dance. The cost is only $50 and the money stays in Kansas (KU Cancer Center) to fight this terrible disease.

The license plates will be available January 1, 2008 for a $50 annual fee in addition to other normal vehicle registration costs. The University of Kansas Cancer Center must first have at least 500 plates ordered and guarantee $10,000 (raised from private sources) to the Kansas Department of Motor Vehicles before production begins. Greg Thomas, cancer survivor and chair of KU’s Department of Design, designed the unique plates with a pink ribbon, sunflower and the words "Driven to Cure." Senator Barbara Allen, a breast cancer survivor, sponsored the legislation that becomes effective July 1, 2007.

Royalty fees from the license plates will go directly to the University of Kansas Cancer Center to support a statewide coordinator for the Midwest Cancer Alliance. The Midwest Cancer Alliance serves as a network of hospitals and physician groups across Kansas and Western Missouri to improve access to comprehensive cancer resources and clinical trials. The statewide coordinator will help disseminate information about breast cancer trials available through the alliance.

Funds raised from the specialty license plates will also help the KU Cancer Center achieve its goal in obtaining the National Cancer Institute’s designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.

"Women in Kansas should not question whether they need to travel to Texas, Minnesota or Massachusetts to obtain the highest standard of care for treatment of breast cancer," Allen said. "We deserve to receive the best cancer care available right here in the Midwest, at home with our family and friends. We have the opportunity to receive that care in the future with the development of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Kansas."

MECDA presents 2nd Annual Video Party

Just want to send an invite to everyone for the Heartland MECDA video party. We had a blast last year--one of the best events I've ever attended. It's so much fun watching videos on a giant movie screen!

Suzanne and I have some er--interesting selections this year.

Bring your performance videos--the footage of the 1940s, 50s and 60s dancers always goes over really well. I think someone is bringing the new Gothic bellydance DVD.

I uploaded the flyer into the photo album, but here are the basics:

SUNDAY MAY 6, 3-5:30 p.m., Jabara Hall Room 128, WSU Campus. Members free, non-members $2.00 suggested donation. Remember that we are a non-profit that supports domestic violence charities. Light refreshments (feel free to bring).

For two bucks it's a very cheap date.

A message from MECDA's Central Board

A letter was mailed to MECDA members from a "Concerned Committee." This is our response which will be sent to All Mecda Members who have given us their email addresses.

MECDA was formed as an organization to improve wages and conditions for Bellydancers. We have accomplished that - and we have moved on to become a needed communications organization to provide unity and service to all dance communities throughout the United States.

As to our finances: We have a direct connection between receipts and 1099's to all payments, which are made by check; we have no credit cards. There is no money missing from MECDA.

We did pay a penalty to the IRS for one year when Treasurers were changing offices, and our statement was late. This was years ago, and it was not a big issue: Once in 30 years is a great record.

We have about 20 individuals working in the Central Board and the Cairo Carnivale. For them to receive an average of $1,300 a year means about $100 a month. This may not even account for the gas money they spend to do their job.

Officer qualifications change according to what computer skills are available for them to do their jobs in the best and easiest manner.
If an individual on the Board does not perform competently, they are replaced.

We had a request to sub out our 'treasurer' position to an accountant. He would only enter our materials into "Quicken," no judgement of the appropriateness of the invoice, no response to members, no attendance at meetings. Data entry is only a small part of what the MECDA Treasurer does. He was not useful to us.

Obviously, all MECDA members are valued and treated equally. Each MECDA member pays a maximum of $50 to join - they receive $74.00 worth of publications (Chronicles, Happenings, Directory) in return, as well as discounts on events and products. We make up for the difference between this amount and your membership fee from revenue generated by the Cairo Carnivale.

The individuals who sent you that letter didn't even trust you to vote the way they want even after reading their distortions and lies.They expect you to send them your blank ballot with the required envelope to them - so they can vote instead of you!

The current MECDA Board has worked very hard to accomplish communications, events, and services for members across the country.

FYI:

MECDA'S CODE OF CONDUCT includes the following: "Personal information obtained in private will be respected as such. Members will not repeat gossip that could be detrimental to the welfare and happiness of others."

AND Furthermore:

Article IX of the MECDA Bylaws states: "Names, addresses, phone numbers and other pertinent information of and about MECDA members will be kept in confidence by the officers so entrusted for the sole reason of conducting MECDA affairs, and will not be released without permission of the specific member(s) involved."

It is unknown at this time who provided the confidential names and addresses of MECDA's membership, but this situation is currently under investigation. If the person(s) involved in releasing the confidential information are discovered, pertinent action will be taken.

Please contact all members in your chapters and all of your MECDA friends and encourage them to send in their OWN ballots!

For Sale. . . Plus Size Bra/Belt

I have a Bra and Belt that I purchased on EBAY that does not quite fit. It is a homemade item that is very intricate, and needs some MINOR adjustments. Furthermore, it is PLUS SIZE. . . I would guess about 38-40 D-DD. As I am a DDD, it is difficult to fit. It was made from a Lane Bryant brassiere. Dark Blue with some purple. Lots of spangles! $80.

I'd just like to thank everyone who came out today to the 5th annual (and final) Bellydance Bazaar! What we lacked in NUMBERS, was balanced out by the shear QUALITY and spending power of the participants who braved the weird March weather. :-)

I'm proud to say that I will be making a donation to the Kansas Humane Society in the amount of $175. It will be given to them from the "Area Bellydance Community." =^..^=

I've had a blast doing the bazaar for the past five years, but I'm turning the reins over to the Heartland MECDA organization. Look to them in the future for upcoming community events like this one!

Thanks again to everyone who came out, and a special thanks to the wonderful clean-up team!! We were out of there even before schedule!!!

Our favorite Groupie and photographer is having a birthday on Wed. March 21st. So since this looks like an actual saturday night off from performances. We decided to meet at N&J's Bakery on Sat. night, March 24th. The dancing starts at 7:00. So should we meet there at 6:30? I would like to make a reservation so there is space for everyone. However I need a head count. Who all will be able to make it sat. night for Glenns b-day?

Just a quick reminder...

The Bazaar is THIS Saturday, 3/31/07!

Location: Cowley College, (East entrance-Seminar Room)
4501 E. 47th St. So. <47th and Oliver>
Time: 11am-3pm
(Those with a bunch to set up can do so at 10am. There will be tables galore, but I don't have any racks! Any that you can bring would be appreciated!)

Admission: $5 for vendors, $2.50 if you're just shopping (Proceeds will go to the KS Humane Society)

There will be snacks, drinks, and door prizes...as usual!

A couple of things: 1) Suzanne will not be having HER swap/shop/seminar this summer, so if you have unwanted BD items this is the time to bring them out and send them happily to a new home! 2) Jasmine and Lena from the BigBadBaghdadBand have made 100's of harem pants and vests and will have them for sale! Get your RennFaire garb!!!

Bellydance Bazaar - NEW DATE!

The Bellydance Bazaar will happen!!!

I resheduled for Saturday, 3/31. It's at a different location, though, it's now in the Seminar Room at Cowley College (Southside Education Center) 4501 E. 47th St. South. Please use the entrance on the EAST side of the building and follow the signs to the room, which is located in the SE corner of the facility. Please be aware that there will be a few classes in session, so keep the noise level down until you get in the Seminar Room!!

If you are vending a bunch of items, you may set up beginning at 10am. If you're just shopping, you may enter at 11am. We will have the room until 3pm. We have to be out of there by 3:30, so shopping will STOP at 3:00 and clean-up will begin...and any volunteers are very much appreciated! :-)

Admission is $5 for vendors and $2.50 for shoppers. Proceeds will go to the Kansas Humane Society. There will be snacks and non-alcholic drinks, and ..... DOORPRIZES!!! The Sisters of Salome will also be performing during the day for your viewing pleasure!!

Be sure to attend to pick up those "last minute" costumes/costume items for the upcoming Ren Faire!!

If you could buy it locally what would it be???????

I am working on stocking the clinic on my property for use as a costume / consignment shop in the near future. I hope to have an open house before the Rennaisance Faire in April. But we will see, its been so busy lately :0(

What I need to know is what items would the local dancer be interested in picking up locally?

So far I have lots of accessories:

Gauntlets
Glitters
Hair falls
Cowrey falls
Hair flowers
bra's
belts
tassels
and other costuming items.

I also have enough room to have a section of the building for consignment if anyone is interested in selling their stuff there as well. It would be great to have a central location for the Wichita Bellydancers to sell and shop at.

I plan on carrying both cabaret and tribal costuming. The shop would be open up on an event basis and by appointment to anyone needing a new costume. When the weather warms up I would like to start having drum circles occasionally as well. I have all this space so we might as well take advantage of it.

So please let me know what you want to buy or what you have to sell.

Just a reminder that Dancing for the Dogs is tonight, Feb 10th at 7 - 952 S Hillside. Come support local dancers who have volunteered to dance for Pets in Crisis - a local charity that takes care of pets while women are in the Women's Crisis Center (YWCA). Tickets are $8 at the door.

Check this out!!! I haven't stayed up on tribe topics so I'm not sure if this has been passed around, but this video is amazing. These two men are able to visually represent the music despite their limitations. There were many times were I just smiled and grooved with them, totaly forgetting their appearance. All the passion in the movement is there and I just love it! I hope this sends out a positive and encouraging message to all and not a negative one. We should all be so lucky to have that much soul!

Research Paper on belly dancing

I'm sick of just the plain old tribal drums right now...I need some rhythm. Artists and songs would be great. Any style music is okay, whether it's super poppy and fast or very ethnic and slow.

BDSS workshop in Wichita

Thanks to all of you who made it to the Jillina and Issam workshop held at Safira's Center for World Dance. Both of them remarked that they had a wonderful time and felt a wonderful energy and would be happy to be back in the future. Both were excellent instructors, of course, but thanks to your participation the workshops were a success. Hopefully having had four successful BDSS workshops on one day (including the two offered at Amira's) showed the organization that Wichita is definitely a place they want to put on future tours!

Memorial Service for Nabil Seyam

I am very sad to report that Nabil Seyam was killed in a car crash in Oklahoma. He was a pivotal figure in the local Arab community and a very nice guy. He married Nihad and I.

A private ceremony and burial will be held Sunday. A public memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Oct. 21 at the Muslim Community Center, 6655 E. 34th St. North.

Also, a memorial has been established by the Islamic Society of Wichita. Donations can be sent to: Islamic Society of Wichita, Attn. Nabil Seyam Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 8157, Wichita, KS 67208.

We're having a MECDA meeting on Sunday, Riverside Perk, 3:00 p.m.

For our November meeting, we will be having a big video party at WSU. Glenn was sweet enough to get us a NICE classroom with a huge screen! We'll be bringing snacks and whatnot. More details to follow. This will be the second Sunday in November from 3:00-5:30 or so.

I'm so happy right now! We sold 90 tickets! We ran out of seating! If you count our assistants who were eligible for special free admission we had 100 people! Yay!

An open invitation to a PARTY! -X-Post-

Some of you may know already, but a chapter of the Middle Eastern Culture and Dance Association (MECDA) has been formed in Wichita, and is starting to take steps to become active! There's a tribe dedicated to the Heartland Chapter and you can check it out here:

The kick-off dance party will be "Hafla in the Heartland," held Saturday, July 29th from 6:30-9:30 PM at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Wichita,1501 Fairmount St, Wichita, KS. We will have snacks, a show, and will follow it ALL with a rousing session of open dancing to round out the evening. MECDA membership information will be on hand for those who would like to know more about the organization, and possibly join.

If you would like to dance in the show, please let me know! EVERYONE IS WELCOME! Dance slots are limited to a maximum of 10 minutes (solos or troupes) to allow everyone who wants to participate a chance to do so. Please reserve your place by JULY 15th!! (Costumes are required for show participants, but "civilian clothes" are fine for the open dancing! :-)

Admission is $5 per person, or $2 per person if you bring a favorite food to share with everyone! Children under 12 free. MECDA will supply the drinks and eating utensils.

In keeping with MECDA's commitment to abolishing domestic violence, and as a service to the local community, we use the Dance parties as a collection point for Donations. We ask party attendees to bring any clean, good used clothing that you no longer want to our dance parties. These clothes (or any new cosmetic items; lotion shampoo, conditioner, makeup, etc.) will be donated to the closest shelter for battered women in the party area.

It would be wonderful to have a fantastic turnout for this event, and we hope to see you there!

The person in charge of MECDA membership says to be sure and write her a note when you join online that says that you're with the Kansas/Wichita/Heartland chapter. She said it would be easier for them to keep track of. She said there's so many chapters springing up in the midwest that they're overwhelmed, so mention KS and it will be processed faster.

They have been amazed with the response from here by the way. Totally shocked actually. ;O)

MINUTES
Sunday, May 07, 2006

Present: Dana, Pat, Julie, Raven, Marisa, Christina, Judie, Jill, Heather, Shawna

We voted overwhelmingly for Heartland MECDA as our new chapter title.

We elected officers, but we still need a secretary. After convincing everyone to run, here are the results of the voting:

President: Marisa
Vice-President: Judie Dansby
Treasurer: Jill
Secretary: As yet to be determined but possibly Suzanne—by the way, Suzanne, you were nominated, but if you’re too busy we totally understand. Nobody else volunteered. So if anyone wants to be Secretary, let me know. :O) I didn’t hear from anyone who wanted to vote absentee, so I assume everyone is ok with this voting.

Following the appointment of our Secretary, I will turn in the names to MECDA and they will give us our charter and spot on their website.

We will be working on a mission statement, bylaws etc. for our next meeting, which will be held on Sunday, June 11, at 3:00 at Riverside Perk. Most of us agree that one of our main objectives is to increase the profile of Middle Eastern dance in this town, and try to impart upon people that we are not hoochie koochie strippers. We also want to expose ourselves (figuratively speaking of course) to the mainstream dance community. We want them to realize we are a serious group of well-trained dancers.

In regards to events:

We decided to start out small this year, and work our way up to larger events, i.e. shows and workshops.

MECDA requires us to have at least two fundraisers per year, and we may add other events at will. Jill volunteered her annual Dancing for Dogs fundraiser as one, and I volunteered the Bellydance Prom (bellydance show + prom that I was going to have anyway) as the MECDA kickoff party. We can’t do one in winter because of the two big studio shows, as well as several major workshops. I tentatively set the date of the Bellydance Prom as Saturday, July 29. We decided to do a clothing drive as our fundraiser. MECDA’s primary fundraising efforts are focused towards helping battered women. Pat suggested dividing people into teams for a dress-up contest with Goodwill clothes at our event, and that idea was received well; the purpose of this would be to get people from all of the studios to work together, and to meet new people outside their own group.

Lots of people suggested different venues for our events, including: Jill’s UCC Church (where Paws Up benefit and lots of Suzanne’s workshops are held), Derby Rec Center, East High Auditorium, Orchard Park Rec, 20th Century Club, Cotillion (for larger event), Wichita State venues, Masonic lodges, Moose Lodge, Heather’s public pool. Prices vary on these from free with donation to $400 per 3-4 hours.

Shawna suggested we all join the International Dance Council (http://www.cid-unesco.org/index.php), which is probably a very good idea. They have several excellent dance publications. For info on membership, click here: http://www.cid-unesco.org/html/cid_membership.html We may join as an organization for 110 Euros (sorry I don’t know the exchange rate right now but will look it up), or we can join individually for 55 Euros. Shawna explained that many of the professional dance companies in Kansas/Wichita are affiliated with this organization, and the networking is excellent. I also notice that there are members from Lebanon, Greece and Africa on their governing board.

We do communicate a lot on our Wichita MECDA tribe. http://tribes.tribe.net/wichitamecda You must be a member of tribe.net to post, but not to read the forum. If you are not on the web, let me know and I’ll send out email updates. Also, if you were not at the meeting, I need your name, address, phone number and email! Shawna suggested a phone tree also, and this is probably a good idea. We’ll figure that out at the next meeting.

MECDA organizational meeting

I told Riverside Perk to expect up to 15 people.

The main thing we'll be doing is electing officers and deciding on a chapter name. If you want to vote for officers, you might go ahead and become a full-fledged dues-paying member, just to keep with MECDA protocol. If any of you members want to vote absentee, I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem. I know a couple people won't be able to make it because of other dance conflicts.

I haven't heard exact numbers, but the MECDA people said there has been overwhelming response! Yay! And we're not even really promoting ourselves yet. I think that's a good sign.

Car pool

I just got my gas bill, and it's gone up 200% since I moved to the southwest side.

So....I was wondering if anyone around here commutes from the Southwest side to the Northeast side of town (WSU). I'd be willing to start a carpool. It would be nice if I could find someone sane that I know, rather than some random commuter off the street. Plus, ya'll wouldn't be offended by bellydance music at 7:30 a.m.

Moderator going AWOL

....for a week while I handle the moving.

I have officially become a West sider. Which reminds me, if any of you know of any health food stores on the west and/or south side I would greatly appreciate a suggestion. I don't want to drive all the way to the east Whole Foods.

I won't have internet access for about a week. So if anyone needs to get ahold of me, the best way to reach me is by phone, or smoke signal. I'm also skipping my dance classes this week because my knees are in major pain from going up and down stairs about a billion times. Will be back next week though.

Several people have asked about the cats. Sasha Louise and Fatty Catty are doing slightly better. There is still some hissing and diva drama, but at least this time I'm not bleeding.

Let's start a MECDA chapter

Ok, I've been thinking about this for a while, and I'm not the only one.

So....here is the link to the parent organization. They have posted their code of ethics, bylaws, etc. So let me know what you think. I have two friends who have successfully started and maintained drama-free MECDA chapters. I'm going to write them this week and see what they have to say about starting up. I think this would only be positive for the dance community. And it would also give us a lot more performance/professional opportunities.
